Mamacita’s Kelly Creek Classic
Kerrville, TX
I was in Ohio and missed the race. I'm told Kelly Creek is the
most difficult course in the Fall Series and with temp.s in the 110 range...Yikes!

X-Bar Shoot Out
2000

What can I say, the drive, beautiful country...! First off for
an "old" dog I'm still learning a few tricks. Most important lesson
this race was:
Racer know thy course!
I "pre-rode" Saturday after clearing registration. While waiting
in line I noticed riders checking out the course maps...it registered and
yet it didn't. I took off and before long came upon a split in the
trail, red and blue to the right and green to the left, damn which way
to go? I stopped and waited for some riders to come along and waited
and waited... Ok, pro and sport together and beginner seperate, I took
the green...WRONG. I pre-rode the Jr's course, missing some five
miles of my actual race course. I wasn't worried as I've ridden terrain
very similar earlier in the summer, I'd just give it a go come race time.
The first through third finishers broke away form me and the fifth
place finisher rather quickly. I was happy not to be eating their
dust, which was thick at times. I traded places a couple of times
with the remaining rider before passing him for good at about the half
way mark. I finished in fourth place with a time of 1:04:16

Another great race, big kudos to the nice folks at Bike Lane for putting
on a great race. My goal was to finish in an hour or less and I did
it, finishing in 54 minutes. I placed 16th out of 30 and had a blast.
The course was fun and fast. I pushed hard in the beginning and payed
the price as I was passed by a couple of riders in my division within a
half mile of the finish and couldn't stay with them. I just have
to keep at it. Thanks to all the volunteers, Huntsville State Park,
Ford and I.W. Marks for supporting this race.

This was a tough race for a big old goat like myself. Tight
twisting through the woods single track with an occasional patch of jeep
trail just not my best terrain. Throw in the climbs up the dam and
I was a spent penny by the time I reached the finish. Did I mention
it was raining to boot, fortunately it wasn't enough to make a mess of
the trail as it could easily have. I'm still awaiting word on my
finishing time and place...out of a field of 17 I don't think I did very
well. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the race or challenge myself,
as I did.
